Admissions Policy and Procedures
Saint Mel
Catholic School is accepting applications for the upcoming school year. The school accepts applications throughout
the year with review and acceptance depending on current enrollment.
- Mrs. Nagel, our principal, provides a guided tour of the campus. You will have an opportunity to learn more
about student life and how St. Mel School integrates faith with academic excellence, including Student Learning Expectations, curriculum
standards, faith development, financial aid, before and after school care,
student clubs, athletics, technology, fine arts and more.
- St. Mel School offers a student visitation program for
prospective students applying to grades 1-8. Visitation begins at 8:00 a.m. in
the school office. For incoming TK,
Kindergarten and First grade students, parent observations are arranged on an
individual basis.
- Copies of your child’s Birth Certificate, Immunization Records,
Baptismal Certificate and copies of last Report Card for grades 1-8 must be on
file before your student can enter St. Mel School.
- You are invited to join us at our Open House during Catholic
Schools Week, the last Sunday, of January from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Upon request, you will be given a guided tour
by a member of our Student Council.
Please call the school office
at 916-967-2814 or e-mail
jnagel@stmelschool.org to schedule a visit.
Transitional Kindergarten
Applicants for TK must be 4 years old by September 1st. Since TK is designed to be a bonus year
before Kindergarten, our TK students have a mix of summer, fall and winter
birthdays. Some incoming TK students have already had their 5th birthday and
others will be 5 during the course of the school year.
Kindergarten
Applicants
for Kindergarten must be 5-years old by September 1st. In the spring, our Kindergarten teacher will
access each child in a stress-free, 15-minute evaluation. This provides us with a “snapshot” of your
child’s capabilities and their readiness for our Kindergarten Program. Parents complete an information sheet
allowing us to have a more comprehensive understanding of your child’s needs.
Grades 1-8
The
teacher of their incoming grade level will evaluate applicants for grades 1-8. The evaluation process includes grade level
appropriate testing in Language Arts and Mathematics. Previous standardized tests, report cards,
and a recommendation for your child’s current teacher are helpful.
Extension Program
St.
Mel Extension Program supports and supplements the family by providing a safe
and comfortable environment for the children of St. Mel School. The 2018 school
year will be our eighteenth year of service to the families. We provide a link
between school and home, fulfilling the needs of the children, parents and our
parish community.
We
adhere to the same philosophies, rules and regulations as stated in the School
Parent-Student Handbook. While the
school has a structured environment, the adult supervised Extension Program
will provide a flexible setting for relaxation and learning. Snack, study hall,
recreation, and enrichment activities are part of the program.
Your
child will relax, thrive and develop friendships in a safe, caring, environment.
Here they can share God’s love, and practice goodness and kindness.
The
Extension program continues to offer several payment plans in an effort to
accommodate the various scheduling needs of students in grades TK through
Eight.
